José Gurvich

 
José Gurvich was born in Lithuania in 1927.
 
 
1932 Settles in Montevideo with his family
1942 He started to study painting at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, his teacher was the Uruguayan painter José Cúneo.
1943 He studied music and violin with the Russian violinist David Julber, there he met Horacio Torres.
1944 Is introduced  to the painter Joaquín Torres García Horacio’s father. His vocation for the visual arts was awakened as a result of this meeting.
1945 Gurvich joined the Taller (Workshop) Torres-García,
1954 He traveled to Europe with fellow TTG artists Manuel Aguiar and Antonio Pezzino. In Europe he met up with HoracioTorres. Together they visited museums in Spain, France, Holland, and Italy.
1955 The Ramot Menasche kibbutz invited Gurvich to paint a mural for the communal dining room. He settled in the kibbutz working as a shepherd.
1956 He returned to Europe visiting Madrid and Amsterdam .In December he returned to Montevideo.
1963 Gurvich Opened a ceramics workshop. There he teaches a group of young artists, like Celeste Núñez, Adolfo Nigro and Ernesto Drangosh among others.
1964 New trip to Europe and Israel, this time with his wife and son. They visit France and then move on to Israel where livee at the Ramot Menasche kibbutz, where Gurvich paints and works again as a shepherd.
1969 Travels to Europe and Israel with his family visiting Madrid, Barcelona, France, and Greece.
1970 Settles in New York.
1974 At 47 dies of a heart attack in New York.
After featuring his work in exhibitions such as the one dedicated to the Torres-García workshop, in 2000 Gurvich joins the group of artists of our gallery.

The José Gurvich Foundation is created in 2001 and it will later become the museum of the same name.
